One of the last surviving D-Day veterans finally receives the benefits he is owed

Washington, D.C. (DATE) — AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. is honored to welcome 102-year-old World War II veteran Rev. Dr. Arlester Brown as a member and ambassador. One of the last surviving D-Day veterans, Rev. Dr. Brown’s extraordinary service and sacrifice have earned him some of the nation’s highest military honors, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and France’s Legion of Honour and the French Order of Merit.

Drafted into the U.S. Army at age 18, Rev. Dr. Brown served with the 599th Quartermaster Laundry Company, supporting Allied forces as they advanced across France, the Netherlands, and into Germany following the D-Day invasion. In January 1945, he was seriously wounded when a German V-1 flying bomb exploded near his unit, earning him the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.

After returning home, Rev. Dr. Brown pursued higher education and devoted his life to serving others. A graduate of Grambling State University, he is a hall of fame football player who played under legendary head coach Eddie Robinson. Despite his distinguished military record, he spent decades encountering barriers to receiving the veterans’ benefits he had earned. Today, AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. is working alongside Rev. Dr. Brown to help him secure those long-overdue benefits, while ensuring that every veteran receives the care, benefits, and recognition they have earned through their service to the nation.

“Rev. Dr. Arlester Brown’s courage on the battlefield, lifetime of service, and perseverance in the face of decades of bureaucratic obstacles remind us exactly why AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. exists,” said Anthony Goodesmith, Commander of AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. “No veteran who answered our country’s call should have to fight for their benefits. We’re proud to stand beside Rev. Dr. Brown as we fight for veterans to receive the care, respect, and support they’ve earned, and we’re honored that he’ll help lead that mission as an ambassador.”

“AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. has changed my life by helping me get the benefits I’m owed, and I can’t thank them enough,” said Rev. Dr. Arlester Brown, AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. Ambassador. “It means a great deal to know that my story can also help shine a light on the challenges other veterans face. I’m proud to join AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. and help make sure other veterans don’t spend years fighting for what they’ve earned.”

As an AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. ambassador, Rev. Dr. Brown will help champion the Post’s Never Forgotten Fund, a community impact initiative dedicated to turning remembrance into practical support for veterans and military families. Through events, sponsorships, donations, and partner outreach, the program raises resources for direct veteran support while building public awareness and long-term community commitment.

Supporting Military Families Through Back-to-School Readiness Programs with AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C.

A new school year is more than a return to classrooms. For military and veteran families, it can represent another period of adjustment: new routines, new schools, changing financial demands, and the work of helping children feel prepared and connected.

That is why military family support matters at the start of the school year. When families have access to practical resources and a community willing to stand beside them, students can begin the year focused on learning rather than worrying about what they may be missing.

AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. is working to strengthen that support through school readiness initiatives, volunteer service, community partnerships, and connections to resources that can benefit the entire military family.

1. Understanding the Challenges Military Families Face

Military families are resilient, but resilience should not mean having to manage every transition alone.

Frequent moves can mean children must leave friends, teachers, sports teams, and familiar routines behind. A new duty station can bring a new school district, different academic expectations, and the challenge of rebuilding a sense of belonging.

For some veteran families, transition continues after military service. Changes in employment, housing, benefits, education, or household finances can place additional pressure on parents and caregivers.

Community-led back to school donation initiatives can help address one practical part of that transition. A backpack, notebooks, folders, writing supplies, or other classroom essentials may seem simple, but having the right materials can help a student walk into school feeling prepared alongside their classmates.

For a military or veteran family managing several competing priorities, reducing even one back-to-school expense can make a meaningful difference.

2. Why School Readiness Matters

Readiness is about more than checking items off a supply list.

Students need the tools to participate in class, but they also need confidence, consistency, and a sense that they belong. Starting school without essential materials can create unnecessary stress for a child and additional financial pressure for a family.

Providing school supplies for students is therefore not simply an act of giving. It is a practical investment in a young person’s ability to arrive prepared, participate fully, and focus on learning.

For military-connected students, that preparation can be especially valuable during periods of change. Small forms of stability can help make a new environment feel more manageable.

This is also why effective school readiness efforts should consider the whole family. When parents and caregivers know their community is available to help, they gain another connection to people and organizations that can provide guidance beyond the beginning of the school year.

3. The Role of Community

No single organization can meet every need facing military and veteran families. Stronger outcomes are possible when nonprofits, businesses, educational institutions, volunteers, civic organizations, donors, and community leaders contribute what they can.

Businesses might sponsor supplies or provide financial support. Individuals can volunteer their time. Community organizations can help identify families who could benefit from assistance. Educational partners can connect military-affiliated families with longer-term learning opportunities.

Well-designed youth readiness programs bring these contributions together around a clear outcome: helping young people begin the school year equipped, encouraged, and connected.

This approach matters to AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. because supporting veterans means recognizing the people who serve alongside them at home. Spouses, caregivers, children, and survivors are part of the veteran community, and their stability contributes directly to the well-being of veteran households.

Community involvement can therefore extend well beyond a donation. It can become part of a reliable network that families know they can turn to throughout the year.

4. How AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. Is Helping

AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. is bringing its veteran-first approach to back-to-school readiness by creating opportunities for members, volunteers, donors, businesses, and community partners to contribute in practical ways.

School supply drives can provide essential classroom materials. Encouragement kits can remind military-connected students that their community recognizes and supports them. Volunteers can help organize, prepare, and distribute resources. Partnerships can extend the reach of each effort.

Together, these community service projects turn goodwill into useful support. Much of that coordination runs through Vice-Commander Steve Homsi, a hands-on leader at AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. who works directly with volunteers, donors, and partner organizations, and who can usually be found at the packing tables and distribution events himself.

The goal is not to make assumptions about what military families need. It is to listen, connect families with relevant resources, and build partnerships capable of responding to real needs.

That same philosophy guides the Never Forgotten Fund, an AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C. initiative that connects donors, volunteers, civic partners, and veteran-serving organizations to practical support for veterans, military families, and survivors.

The Never Forgotten Fund turns remembrance into action through transparent community giving, resource connection, and veteran-led service. It reflects a straightforward principle: honoring military service should produce meaningful support for the people behind that service.

Extending Readiness Through Education: AMVETS Post #12 Washington D.C and UMGC

Back-to-school readiness does not end with children entering a K–12 classroom. Education can also play an important role in the long-term stability of veterans, servicemembers, spouses, and their families.
